Tip #88: Space wall studs up to 24

One of the new framing standards suggested by both the Department of Housing and Development and the Department of energy is to space wall studs up to 24" apart rather than 16" apart. If built correctly, this will not weaken the structure of the house. This option may not be recommended in regions prone to storms producing strong winds, but it is an acceptable alternative in many regions. Just check with your local building codes office to ensure your work will pass inspection. Spacing wall studs farther apart saves money in several ways:

  • You will need to purchase and use less lumber
  • It requires less labor and incurs less labor cost
  • It allows you to install more insulation, making your home more energy-efficient
