Tip #71: Minimize hallways

Hallways in a house serve a single function: to provide access to living spaces. The more space devoted to hallways, the less living space remains. You can avoid the loss of hallway space by designing entry to rooms in a way that minimizes the need for halls. You can also save space by making hallways no wider than necessary. Check with your local building codes office to determine the minimum requirements for hallways. Then build to the minimum. Plan your hallway so that it leads directly into the room at the end without passing any of the length of the room. This allows you to use that space in the room rather than in the hall. When you minimize areas devoted to hallways, you save space, save on building materials, and you save on labor costs.
