Tip #195: Install attic foil to block heat or use heat-blocking attic paint to save energy

The attic is a primary place for heat exchange to occur. This means that heat comes into a home through the attic and that heat can be lost through the attic. One way to save energy in your home is to install attic foil to block heat or to use heat-blocking attic paint. While the paint blocks the movement of warmer air, the foil actually reflects the heat back. In a cold climate, attic foil can be a very effective way to prevent heat loss through the attic and/or roof. In warm climates, attic foil can significantly reduce the amount of heat that enters your attic from the sun. Heat-blocking paints contain small amounts of ceramic material. This ceramic material is somewhat like the heat shields on the space shuttle in dispersing and deflecting heat.
