Tip #186: Add exterior insulation covered with synthetic stucco

Many homes built before 1990 were inadequately insulated. If you want to make your home more comfortable and improve energy-efficiency, you might want to consider adding exterior insulation. If the exterior of your home needs work, exterior insulation might be the remedy for this situation as well. You can now purchase exterior insulation with a very high insulation value that is covered with a synthetic stucco material. Adding the insulation on the outside of the house is especially effective because it keeps the entire wall, including the lumber, at a more controlled temperature. There are several manufacturers of these synthetic stucco materials that provide both beauty and effective insulation. The materials are available in a wide variety of colors, textures and finishes. The board is rigid and relatively easy to install for most experienced do-it-yourselfers. So consider the exterior insulation option before you commit to more costly approaches to adding space for insulation in the walls of your home.
