Cracks in driveways, sidewalks and patios may be unsightly. They also open a point of access for water to erode or damage your concrete. If you have cracks that need attention, be aware that there are viable alternatives to completely replacing the concrete. These alternatives are also far less expensive. If your concern is to protect otherwise sound concrete, and you are not very concerned about the appearance of the finished work, you can simply fill and seal the crack with a concrete sealant. If the crack is in a highly visible location and you are concerned about the appearance of your driveway, sidewalk or patio, you can probably refinish the area rather than replace the entire area of concrete. You can refinish the area with a stiff mixture of sand-based concrete that is applied to a roughened surface. You will need to pack the new concrete down to ensure that it adheres tightly. This can be accomplished with a rented roller, or with a tamper or a shovel. If your concrete is otherwise sound, this alternative to replacement will save hundreds of dollars.
